OSTEOCHONDRAL LESIONS: PAIN AND BLOCKAGES IN THE ANKLE

Osteochondral lesions of the ankle affect the cartilage and underlying bone, usually in the talus region. They are often related to trauma or repetitive microtrauma.

Symptoms of osteochondral lesions

  • Deep pain in the ankle, especially when walking or running.
  • Occasional inflammation with no apparent cause.
  • A feeling of locking or stiffness in the ankle.
  • Clicking or a “gritty” feeling inside the joint.

Diagnosis

It is confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography to assess the condition of the cartilage.

Treatment

  • Mild cases: Rehabilitation and physiotherapy to strengthen the joint.
  • Advanced cases: In large injuries or in people with intense physical activity, arthroscopic surgery can be used to clean the injury and stimulate cartilage regeneration.
