ANKLE INSTABILITY: WHEN THE ANKLE BENDS EASILY
Ankle instability is a common consequence of poorly healed or repetitive sprains. It occurs when the ankle ligaments have weakened and can no longer maintain joint stability.
Symptoms of ankle instability
- Sensation that the ankle “gives way” or gives way easily.
- Chronic pain on the outside of the ankle.
- Mild and recurring inflammation, especially after physical activity.
- Difficulty walking on uneven terrain or playing sports without fear of twisting your ankle.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made through clinical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imagingto assess the condition of the ligaments and rule out other injuries.
Treatment
- Rehabilitation: A specific program of muscle strengthening and proprioceptive exercises can improve ankle stability.
- Orthotics: In some cases, the use of bandages or stabilizing ankle supports is recommended when playing sports.
- Surgery: If the instability is severe and does not improve with rehabilitation, it may be necessary to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligaments using minimally invasive surgery.
