TENDON INJURIES: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN SPORTS TRAUMATOLOGY

Tendons are key structures in the musculoskeletal system, responsible for transmitting force from muscles to bones to enable movement. However, they can suffer injuries due to overuse, trauma, or degeneration, causing pain and functional limitations. At our traumatology and sports medicine clinic, we offer accurate diagnosis and advanced treatments for these conditions.

Most Common Tendon Injuries

  • Tendinitis and biceps ruptureIt can affect the long head of the biceps at the shoulder or the distal tendon at the elbow. It manifests as pain in the front of the arm and loss of strength. Treatment includes physical therapy, injections, and, in some cases, surgery.
  • Achilles tendinopathyCommon in runners and athletes, it presents with pain in the heel and calf. Treatment combines physical therapy, shockwave therapy, and, if necessary, surgical repair in cases of rupture.
  • Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)This condition affects athletes who perform repetitive jumping, causing pain in the front of the knee. It is treated with relative rest, specific exercises, and regenerative therapy.
  • Hamstring injuryIt can involve both the muscle and the proximal tendon in the hip, causing intense pain and limited mobility. It is managed with progressive rehabilitation and, in cases of complete avulsion, surgery.
  • Peroneal tendinitisIt affects the lateral tendons of the ankle, causing pain and instability. Treatment includes partial immobilization, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, reconstructive surgery.
  • Posterior tibial muscle dysfunctionIt causes pain and weakness in the arch of the foot, which can lead to progressive flat feet. It is managed with orthotics, physical therapy, and surgery in advanced stages.
  • Iliotibial band syndrome (runner’s knee)This condition is caused by repetitive friction of the iliotibial band against the femur, resulting in lateral knee pain. Treatment includes physical therapy, biomechanical correction, and, in persistent cases, injections.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In our clinic, we use advanced tests such as ultrasound and MRI for accurate diagnosis. Treatments include physiotherapy, dry needling, shockwave therapy, injections (platelet-rich plasma, corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid), and minimally invasive surgery when necessary.
