ANTERIOR AND POSTERIOR IMPEGGING SYNDROME: ANKLE IMPEDING
Impingement syndrome occurs when the soft tissues or bony structures of the ankle become trapped during movement, limiting mobility and causing pain.
Types of ankle impingement
- Previous impingement:
- It occurs in the front of the ankle, usually in athletes who perform repetitive flexion movements (such as soccer players or dancers).
- It causes pain and a feeling of being stuck when bending the ankle upwards.
- Posterior impingement:
- It occurs at the back of the ankle, frequently affecting runners and dancers.
- It causes pain when extending the foot downwards or when putting weight on the toes.
General symptoms
- Pain in the front or back of the ankle when flexing or extending the foot.
- A feeling of being stopped or blocked in certain movements.
- Inflammation after physical activity.
Treatment
- Rest and physiotherapy to reduce inflammation and improve mobility.
- Infiltrations with corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid in persistent cases.
- Arthroscopic surgery In severe cases, to eliminate the cause of the pinching.
