PERONEAL INJURIES: PAIN ON THE OUTER SIDE OF THE ANKLE
The peroneal tendons run along the side of the ankle and play a key role in its stability. These injuries are common in runners and athletes who make sudden twisting motions.
Symptoms of peroneal tendinopathy
- Pain on the outer side of the ankle, especially when putting weight on the foot or running.
- Inflammation and tenderness to the touch in the lateral area of the ankle.
- A clicking or rubbing sensation on the side of the ankle.
Treatment
- Relative rest and physiotherapy to reduce inflammation and strengthen stabilizing muscles.
- Use of orthotic insoles if there are alterations in the gait.
- Surgery in severe cases with tendon rupture or tendon dislocation.
