ANKLE SPRAINS: THE MOST COMMON INJURY IN ATHLETES

Ankle sprains are by far the most common injury among active people and athletes. They occur when the ligaments that stabilize the joint are stretched or torn due to a twist or improper footing.

Types of ankle sprains

Depending on the severity of the ligament damage, sprains are classified as follows:

  • Grade I (Mild): A sprain or minor tear of the ligaments without joint instability. It manifests as mild swelling and pain when walking.
  • Grade II (Moderate): Partial ligament tear, with significant swelling, bruising, and moderate to severe pain when bearing weight on the foot. There may be a feeling of weakness.
  • Grade III (Severe): Complete ligament rupture, with significant swelling, extensive hematoma, and marked ankle instability. Walking is very difficult or impossible.

Treatment of ankle sprains

The management of a sprain depends on its severity, but in general it follows the protocol. RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation):

  • Acute phase: Relative rest, local application of cold and compression bandage are recommended.
  • Recovery phase: For mild or moderate sprains, rehabilitation begins with mobility exercises and progressive strengthening.
  • Severe sprains: In some cases, especially when there is persistent instability, longer immobilization and even surgery to repair the affected ligament may be necessary.

The most common mistake is not properly rehabilitating a sprainwhich can lead to chronic ankle instability and increase the risk of relapses.
